A fight against fish and seaweed disease
Ardiansyah, lecturer of fish disease and seaweed, Politeknik Pertanian Negeri Pangkep (Politani Pangkep, the Pangkep State Agriculture Polytechnic), is familiar with issues the South Sulawesi community faces in shrimp, fish and seaweed cultivation. Disease has inflicted production of shrimp and seaweed, negatively impacting the income of surrounding communities.
Islam and women empowerment
Dr Eka Srimulyani, Assistant Director II Postgraduate Program at the Ar-Raniry State Islamic Institute in Banda Aceh, saw a vacuum in field-based social research on women and Islam, in particular within the context of pesantren – Islamic boarding schools. With a bachelor and masters degree in Islamic studies, Dr Eka went on to pursue a PhD in International Studies with a specialisation in Asia-Pacific studies at the University of Technology, Sydney as an Australian Development Scholarships awardee in 2002. Her doctoral thesis was published in the Netherlands by University of Amsterdam Press under the tittle Women from Traditional Islamic Educational Institutions in Indonesia: Negotiating Public Spaces.
Encouraging students to debate in English
Passion for education is what prompted Renata C. G. Vigeleyn Nikijuluw to pursue a Masters of Education (TESOL) at the University of Southern Queensland in 2006 under an Australian Development Scholarship. "I knew I would gain valuable knowledge in material development and teaching methodology, among other key skills for a lecturer," said Renata.
Rebuilding a research centre post-conflict
Deciding to pursue a science degree in Fisheries when having to choose which path to take at the end of his first year at Bogor Agricultural Institute, Dr Augy Syahailatua remembers eating fish everyday while growing up in Ambon. A vast coastline and center for the marine and fishery resources management program make Ambon, in the eastern Indonesian Province of Maluku, a good reason for studying fishery sciences.
Agricultural extension as conduit for village welfare
Dr Muktasam has always had a strong passion for agricultural extension – the dissemination of knowledge, innovation and technologies to farmers through non-formal education. “I wholeheartedly believe that agricultural extension serves as a very strategic conduit to increase the welfare of agriculture-focused villages while at the same time preserving the communities’ social and natural capital,” Dr Muktasam elaborates.
